The WWF Water Neutral Scheme

WWF Sanlam Living Waters Partnership

The WWF Water Neutral Scheme is a partnership between civil society, through WWF South Africa, and government, through its Working for Water Programme that allows water users to quantitatively balance their water use account.

Investors are required to engage in a three step process of: Reviewing their water-usage, implementing a reduction strategy, and investing in projects that will quantitatively replenish water to hydrological systems, equivalent to their water usage. As a start, investors can quantitatively replenish their water usage through investment in the clearing of water-intensive invasive alien plants. However, the project encourages the innovation and development of other quantitative mechanisms for offsetting water usage, and proposes an operational model for the development of a Payment for Watershed Services market in South Africa.
