After 6 months of exciting and intensive leadership training on how to empower children, adolescents and adults to shape their mindset and actions for a sustainable future, 9 South Africans have returned from Germany, each with some valuable knowledge, competences and innovation projects on their plates to be implemented here in South Africa. OUR 9 SA LEADERS Iris Gana - Bushbuckridge Municipality Daniel Masote - Limpopo Dept of Education Tatum Tarby – WESSA Thea Holm - Holms and Friends Consultancy Nakampe Makoti & Lethabo Mangale - Dept of Environmental Affairs Thamsanqa Nkosi - Mpumalanga Dept of Education Edwin Nkomo - Gauteng Dept of Education Parks Leshaba - SA Zoological Gardens The purpose of this Leadership Training was to provide a unique exchange and learning opportunity for participants selected from the most promising young professionals in government, research institutions, business and NGOs in the Germany, India, South Africa and Mexico, resulting in potential leaders in the field. Contributing to the UN Decade of ‘Education for Sustainable Development’ (ESD), 2005-2014, coordinated worldwide by UNESCO, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusam- menarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Germany, has taken up the initiative on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Co-operation and Development, to work with experts from India, Mexico, South Africa and Germany to develop a program aimed at improving the implementation of ESD. Education for Sustainable Development is an important aspect of education quality that enables people to understand their own as well as the global contexts of sustainable development and to shape their actions and attitudes accordingly.
