Where is our water?

The earth has 1.3 billion cubic kilometres of water, of which 97% belongs to the sea - most of that is locked in ice sheets at our poles. So we are left with 0.036 % for the entire world to use.

What about sea water?

An average litre of sea water contains 2.5 teaspoons of common salt and much larger amounts of other elements, compounds and dissolved solids. To keep one house supplied with drinkable water, we create 900 teaspoons of salt and other compounds to dump somewhere. Not to talk about the amount of coal our power stations will have to burn to provide the energy to take the salt out of the seawater in the first place.
