East Rand Protective Workshop

Naas Ferreira

The East Rand Protective Workshop provides a permanent, healthy (physically and emotionally)and creative environment for mentally challenged adults on the East Rand. Here they find unconditional love, a safe environment where they can develop their talents and skills, and where they can be productive adults to cultivate the land and contribute to society.

Recently we have been awarded support from the Urban Greening Fund, managed by Food & Trees for Africa, the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, LandCare SA and the Institute of Environment and Recreation Management, to develop Permaculture food gardens.

This funding is providing skills training in permaculture to produce enough vegetables and fruit to supply the local kitchen, which feeds the Workshop participants. We also hope to donate vegetables and fruit to sister organizations, and we would like to sell the surplus to consumers of organic food.
