On Saturday 24 October, people in 181 countries came together for the most widespread day of environmental action in the planet's history. At over 5 200 events around the world, people gathered to call for strong action and bold leadership on the climate crisis. We were part of the Cape Town group who joined with religious leaders to march from the steps of Parliament to Gardens. It was simply awesome! (Read on for pics) Whilst the turn out was not what I had anticipated, and we hardly got a 'look in' in the media (the Sunday Independent called 24 Oct World Environment Day!), the knowledge that all over the world at the same time people were doing similar was hugely rewarding (it was also incredible to see different religions sharing a stage together – Muslim, Christian (both Catholic and Anglican), Hari Krishna, and Budhist. But together, no matter how small the individual group, we made a HUGE impression. There were more news stories the world over on Saturday and yesterday about the 350 events than any other news story. But the goal isn't to get news coverage, it's to cut carbon! [climate change - what I can do] In Jo'burg some activists either jumped from the Soweto towers or joined Greenpeace to place banners on Nelson Mandela's statue in the Square in Sandton urging Jacob Zuma to provide leadership during the Climate Summit in Copenhagen this December. 350.org is an international campaign to support a clear and bold solution to the climate crisis: reducing the level of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere to 350 parts per million. The 350 goal has become a symbol of climate action around the world. Here are a few pictures of events around South Africa, Africa and the world.
